Paolo Ciampolini graduated (with honors) in Electronic Engineering in 1983, in Bologna. He got the Ph.D. degree in Electronics and Computer Sciences in 1989. From 1990 to 1992 he was with DEIS, at the Univ. of Bologna, as a research assistant. From 1992 to 1998 he was with the Univ. of Perugia, as an Associate Professor. From 1998 to 2001 he was an Associate Professor of Electronics at the Univ. of Parma. Since 2001 he is a full professor at the same University, where he is in charge of digital design courses. From 2001 to 2010, he was Chairman of the Board of Electronics.
His research activity started in the field of physical and numerical models of semiconductor devices, cooperating to several national and international research projects. Within this context, in particular, he some device simulation codes, featuring advanced carrier transport models. He also worked in modeling of semiconductor solid-state sensors. Later, he worked on high-frequency devices and circuits, with emphasis on the signal propagation and integrity issues within ICs. He is national coordinator of the project "Advanced models for interconnects simulation in VLSI circuits", in the framework of the CNR-MADESS II project. He has been unit coordinator of several MURST/MIUR projects.
In collaboration with INFN and CERN, he contributed to some activities related to devices and circuits to be employed in next-generation high-energy physics experiments. In particular, he worked on the optimization of solid-state radiation sensors, modeling radiation-hardness of ICs, and on the development of some circuits in the read-out and front-end sections. Since a few years ago, he has been involved in several activities related to assistive technologies at Parma University, managing several projects in this field. He is currently serving as President of Collaboration Center on Assistive Tecnologies (Centro TAU) at Parma University, which involves several departments. Paolo Ciampolini is author or co-author of about 180 papers, published on international journals or on proceedings of international conferences (with referees).
