Paolo Ciampolini graduated (with honors) in Electronic Engineering in 1983, in Bologna, Italy. He got the Ph.D. degree in Electronics and Computer Sciences in 1989. From 1990 to 1992 he was with DEIS, at the Univ. of Bologna, as a research assistant. From 1992 to 1998 he was with the Univ. of Perugia, Italy, as an Associate Professor. From 1998 to 2001 he was an Associate Professor of Electronics at the Univ. of Parma, Italy. Since 2001 he is a full professor at the same University. From 2001 to 2010, he was Chairman of the Board of Electronics at the University of Parma.
His research activity started in the field of physical and numerical models of semiconductor devices, cooperating to several national and international research projects. Within this context, in particular, he developed some device simulation codes, featuring advanced carrier transport models. He also worked in modeling of semiconductor solid-state sensors. Later, he worked on high-frequency devices and circuits, with emphasis on the signal propagation and integrity issues within ICs.
In collaboration with the Italian Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN, Genève, Switzerland), he contributed to some activities related to devices and circuits to be employed in high-energy physics experiments. In particular, he worked on the optimization of solid-state radiation sensors, modeling radiation-hardness of ICs, and on the development of some circuits in the read-out and front-end sections.
He has been later involved in activities related to assistive technologies at Parma University, managing several projects in this field and aiming at the exploitation of ICT for supporting independent life of elderly people and of people with disabilities. He served as President of the former Collaboration Center on Assistive Tecnologies (Centro TAU) at Parma University.
Within this field, he especially dealt with the development of non-invasive monitoring technique for Active and Assisted Living scenarios. Within this framework, he coordinated activities related to sensor design and networking, to the exploitation of “Internet of Things” technologies and to data analytics techniques, based on machine-learning approaches.
Paolo Ciampolini is author or co-author of about 240 papers, published on international journals or on proceedings of international conferences.
He held scientific coordination responsibilities in the “FOOD” (AAL-JP, EU, 2011-2013) and “HELICOPTER” (AAL-JP, EU, 2013-2016). He was the European coordinator of the “NOAH” (AAL-JP, EU, 2016-2019) project and participated in the “ACTIVAGE” (H2020 IoT-LSP, EU, 2017-2021) project. He sat in the advisory board of a few European projects. He currently seats in the Board of Directors of CLUST-ER Health, the Emilia Romagna regional association gathering large companies, SMEs, laboratories and research centers, facilities active in the healthcare domain.
His teaching activity covered a wide range of topics related to electronics, at undergraduate and graduate levels. He is currently in charge of “Electronics 1” course for the bachelor degree in Parma, dealing with fundamentals of electronic devices and basic digital circuits. Also, at the master degree, he teaches the “Digital Design” course, dealing with advanced digital architectures and low-power design. He he also in charge of “ICT for Health and Wellbeing” course, for Electronics and Telecommunication students. Previously, he was responsible of courses related to logic design, computer architecture, basic analog circuits, microelectronics, VLSI design, semiconductor device physics. He is involved in international cooperation activities as well, and is a regular visiting professor at INES-Ruhengeri University of Applied Sciences in Musanze, Rwanda.
He is currently the European Coordinator of GREATER project (Growing Rwanda Energy Awareness Through highER education) in the framework of ERASMUS+/Capacity Building for Higher Education program.
