Alessandro Chelli has got the degree in Geology at the University of Pisa 28/06/1996. In 1996-1997, he has a period of scientific training at the Institute of Geophysics & Sea Environment (today INGV-La Spezia). He defended his Ph.D. thesis on 20th december 2001 (Title:”The landslides of River Magra Valley: study cases of large landslides”) at University of Perugia.
In the period 2000-2004, Alessandro Chelli performed his research activity at the University of Parma. It was devoted to study the relict glacial and periglacial landforms of the Northern Apennines. During 2002-2005, in collaboration with colleagues from Italian universities, he has promoted and joined the research activity of the AIGEO-Working Group for the study of the relict periglacial landforms in the Italian mountain chains. Alessandro Chelli participated to the research project PRIN2002-“Late Quaternary climate changes and slope instability in the northern Apennines(Scientific Responsible: Prof. Mauro Soldati, Modena and Reggio Emilia University).
In the period 2004-2007 the research activity of Alessandro Chelli was devoted to geomorphological study of the territory surrounding Pisa (CNR-Geosciences and Georesource Insitute) and to geomorphological study of the coastal plain and surrounding territory of the Propriano Bay, in the Gulf of Valinco, Corse, France (within the EU research programme PIC INTERREG III A, title: Analisi integrata del sistema costiero: aspetti geomorfologici, climatici, vegetazionali e antropici. Studi empirici nei litorali della Provincia di Livorno e Corsica (A.I.S.C.)).
Since 1st August 2007 Alessandro Chelli has got a position as full researcher at the Department of Earth Sciences-University of Parma as geomorphologist.

The research activity of Alessandro Chelli is witnessed by more than 70 scientific publications (papers on national and international journals and proceedings of congresses, abstracts and geomorphologic maps) and it is mainly devoted to:
-the study of coastal plains in eastern Liguria, particularly devoted to the reconstruction of the Holocene relative sea-level changes and to the positioning of the shoreline at Roman times (in collaboration with the Department of Earth Sciences-University of Pisa Earth (Prof. Marta Pappalardo), the Ligurian Office for protection of Archaeological sites (Genova) (Dott.ssa Lucia A. Gervasini) and the Department of Geography-University of Colonia (Germany) (Prof. Helmut Brückner));
-the geomorphologic and morphodynamic studies of the rock coast along the shoreline of northern Tyrrhenian and Ligurian seas, with particular emphasis on shore platforms and their evolution as result of the interaction between marine processes (waves, tide and currents) and weathering of the rock surfaces (in collaboration with the Department of Earth Sciences-University of Pisa Earth (Prof. Marta Pappalardo) and ENEA Santa Teresa-Pozzuolo di Lerici, La Spezia (Dott.ssa Federica G. Pannacciulli));
-geoarchaeological studies on the relationships between environmental changes and human settlement at Roman times in the coastal plain of eastern Liguria (in collaboration with the Department of Earth Sciences-University of Pisa Earth (Prof. Marta Pappalardo), the Ligurian Office for protection of Archaeological sites (Genova) (Dott.ssa Lucia A. Gervasini) and the Department of Geography-University of Colonia (Germany) (Prof. Helmut Brückner);
;
-the study of large landslides and deep seated gravitational slope deformations (DSGSDs) in the northern Apennines and Ligurian Alps. The studies are focused on the relationships between the landslides and the geologic and tectonic features of the rocks, with particular emphasis on the relationships with tectonic structures (antiforms) due to the recent tectonic stages of the Apennines mountain chain;
-geomorphological survey and mapping.

Alessandro Chelli is member of the Italian Association of Physical Geography and Geomorphology, of the Tuscan Society of Natural Sciences and of the IAG-Working Group on Rock Coast Geomorphology.
Since academic year 2000-2001 to 2003-2004, Alessandro Chelli, as assistant of the Professor, held seminars and practices and co-organized field trip for the students attending the courses of Geomorphology, Engineering Geomorphology and Geological & Engineering Survey (Faculty of Mathematic, Physic and Natural Sciences-University of Parma).
In the academic years 2004-2005 and 2005-2006, he was contract lecturer holding lessons for the students attending the courses of Geomorphology, Practices of Geomorphology and Methodology for the geomorphological survey of large landslides in the Northern Apennines (Faculty of Mathematic, Physic and Natural Sciences-University of Parma).
Since the academic year 2007-2008, he is lecturer of the courses Engineering Geomorphology and Environmental Geology, Faculty of Mathematic, Physic and Natural Sciences-University of Parma.
In the current academic year he is teacher of Geomorphology and Applied geomorphology.
Alessandro Chelli carried out activity as thesis advisor for the Degree and Master of Geology and Natural Sciences; since 2008 he is a member of the staff of the Doctorate of Earth Science (University of Parma).
