• 1995: Ph.D. in Geological Sciences at the University of Parma (Italy).
• 1991: MSc in Geological Sciences at the University of Parma (Italy).

Participant in several research projects Italian (Prin 2006, Cofin 2000, Cofin 1998) and international (NWO Council, The Netherlands; ESF and EU) and in research projects between University of Parma and Petrobras (Petroleo Brasileiro S.A.) and British Gas Rimi S.p.A.

Vice-Chair  of the Subcommission on Neogene Stratigraphy (SNS) of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) since 2020 and Secretary of the SNS from 2004 to 2020.

Member of the Working Groups of the Subcommission on Neogene Stratigraphy (IC S, IUGS) for the definition of the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) of Langhian and Burdigalian stages (from 2014 to present) and of Tortonian and Serravallian stages (from 2001 to 2007).

Main research interests:

• high resolution biostratigraphy, integrated with cyclostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy, and biochronology of planktonic foraminiferal assemblages from Mediterranean and oceanic areas focussed on Oligo-Miocene boundary and Miocene;
• high resolution biostratigraphy of Mediterranean and open ocean successions aimed to define the Global Stratotype Section and Points (GSSPs)of the Miocene stages;
• paleoceanography, paleoclimatology and paleoecology of Miocene Mediterranean and open ocean successions;
• relationships between foraminiferal assemblages and sedimentary ciclicty from deep marine Mediterranean and open ocean successions;
• relationships between foraminiferal assemblages and sedimentary facies.
