ASSISTANCE ACTIVITY
Dr. De Conto has performed assistance activity in the subsection "Isolation and identification of viral agents and their components" of the Virology Operating Unit of the Diagnostic Department of the University Hospital of Parma from 01/05/2002 to 30 /09/2008. The assistance activity carried out was aimed at reporting diagnostic investigations related to the identification of cytopathogenic viral agents in biological materials of different types. The aforementioned investigations were aimed at hospitalized subjects, subjects in the day hospital regime and subjects from internal outpatient facilities or polyclinics.
Furthermore, Dr. De Conto participated in the organizational activities of the aforementioned sub-sector, performed external quality checks and trained the newly-appointed personnel.
From 01/10/2008 to date, Dr. De Conto performs assistance in the subsectors "Serology Virology" and "Molecular Virology" of the Operative Unit of Virology. The activity consists in the preparation of work plans for the execution of investigations by the technical staff, in the validation of the results and in the subsequent reporting of different types of investigations, manual or automated, aimed at the search for serological markers of viral infection, the quali/quantitative research of viral nucleic acids and their genotyping (papillomavirus, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus) and the determination of the drug resistance of the hepatitis B virus. These investigations were aimed at hospitalized subjects, subjects in day hospital care and subjects from internal outpatient facilities or polyclinics. Lastly, Dr. De Conto contributed to the elaboration of epidemiological-molecular data derived from the assistance activity carried out in the aforementioned subsectors in order to elaborate scientific works.
Since 2007, Dr. De Conto has been a referent for Quality and, since 2008, a reference for educational training programs of the Operative Unit of Virology.

Lines of research

The activity of scientific research is focused on the study of the participation of specific factors of the host cell in the modulation of viral infection, with particular reference to the cytoskeleton, the nuclear matrix and related factors. Considerable experience has been gained in confocal microscopy analysis of possible interactions between viral and cellular components. Currently, the research activity is focused on the study of cellular functions / factors involved in the modulation of early stages of the infection of avian and human influenza in mammalian cell models.
