Massimo Manghi was born in Parma. He graduated in Physics in 1986 with a thesis on an approximate solution of a quantum spin theory model. From 1986 to 1989 he worked for Barilla s.p.a.

Starting from 1989 he started to work for the University of Parma at the Physiology Section of the "Dipartimento di Biologia e Fisiologia Generali", later renamed as "Department of Evolutionary and Functional Biology". His main commitment was the development of software for the treatment of bioelectric signals, namely the ECG signal coming both from single electrode recordings and from multi electrode epicardial maps of the cardiac electrical activity.

In the decade 1990-2000 he participated in various schools and conferences focused on the electrical activity of the heart. In 1995 he visited the Helsinky University of Technology and in 1997 and 2000 the University of Missouri at Columbia.

He became full time researcher of the University of Parma starting from Nov 1st 2000. Afterwards he taught several courses on various topics ranging from "Data Acquisition and Treatment" to "Methods in Physiological Laboratory". He also developed application software for the benefit of the students' classes. One of the applications for the costruction of web sites and HTML generation is available as Open Source software. He's member of the Apache Software Foundation as project chair for the Apache/Tcl project.

He's now working on methods for the general assessment of cardiac rhythm variability (with a special focus on the Respiratory Sinus Arrhytmia (RSA)) and on the recostruction of the refractoriness patterns in epicardial maps.

Starting with July 2012 he's become a member of the Biophysics Unit of the Department of Neuroscience at the Università di Parma

Beginning with the year 2013 he will teach the course "Analysis of biological data and images"
