RESEARCH INTERESTS & PROJECTS

My research focuses mainly on these inter-correlated fields:
1. Clinical course and social-cognitive patterns of Personality Disorders (PD)
I began studying the naturalistic course of Borderline PD (BPD) in Italian treatment settings. I became interested in the cognitive and attentional mechanisms underlying PD patients’ social-cognitive difficulties (i.e., alexithymia, distorted perceptions of interpersonal rejection, difficulty cooperating with others). Ongoing projects in this area include the following:
- The neuroanatomic correlates of social functioning in BPD
Co-investigators: V. Gallese, M. Ardizzi, UNIPR Physiology Unit; P. Riva, E. Preti, Psychology Department, Milano Bicocca University
- Interpersonal emotional regulation in BPD
Co-Investigators: A. Grecucci, Trento University
- Social Simon Effect and social dysfunction in BPD
Co-Investigators: L. Riggio, D. Mussi, UNIPR Psychology Unit
2. The relationship between executive control and social functioning in adulthood
Effortful control (EC) is the self-regulatory aspect of temperament that is rooted in executive attention and promotes social and psychological adjustment in children. I study whether this relationship extends to adults by evaluating if EC is associated with internalizing/externalizing/PD symptoms through its impact on interpersonal functioning. This approach includes both self-report and performance-based EC measures, and multi-level measures of interpersonal functioning (e.g., self-reported interpersonal problems, daily ecological momentary assessments, laboratory measures of social cognition).
Ongoing projects:
- The impact of Effortful Control on Social Cognition and Psychopathology
Co-investigators: K. Meehan & N. Cain, Long Island University; J. Clarkin, Weill Cornell Medical College.
- Executive Attention and Facial Emotion Recognition in Borderline Personality Disorder
Co-investigators: F. Sambataro, Udine University; K. Meehan & N. Cain, Long Island University
3. The interplay between personality, personality disorders and other medical and psychiatric conditions
Personality does not exist in a vacuum. I study how temperament-based self-regulatory skills shape the longitudinal course (at the daily and yearly level) of psychiatric and medical conditions.
Ongoing projects:
- Temperament, Self-regulation and Eating Disorders
Co-Investigators: A. Pelosi, UNIPR Psychology Unit
- Personality and outcome of bariatric surgery for severe obesity
Co-investigators: E. Dall’Aglio, F. Marchesi, UNIPR Medical and Surgical Sciences Departments
