Elena Michelini is Associate Professor of Structural Engineering (ICAR/09) at the Department of Engineering and Architecture (DIA), University of Parma, where she teaches “Structural Safety Assessment” and “Design and Control of Structures Studio”. At the University of Parma, she was previously Assistant Professor RTDB (2021-2024) and RTDA (2016-2021), and post-doc research fellow (2008-2016).

She graduated with honors in Civil Engineering at the University of Parma, and received her PhD in Civil Engineering (Structural Mechanics curriculum) in 2007. In 2008, she was the winner of a one-year grant on "Theoretical Developments and Innovative Applications in Civil Engineering" funded by the Emilia-Romagna group of the Knights of Labor.

Her research focuses on nonlinear analysis of RC and PC structural elements (beams and slabs, special roof elements, hollow core slabs, tunnel linings), also in the presence of fire; seismic vulnerability assessment of strategic existing buildings; capacity assessment of buildings and infrastructure through FE analysis; mechanical characterization and numerical modeling of the behavior of autoclaved aerated concrete masonry; development and characterization of innovative sustainable materials (alkali-activated materials).

She works on several research projects, including PRIN 2022 - "FAIL-SAFE: near-real-time perFormance Assessment of exIsting buiLdings Subjected to initiAl Failure through multi-scalE simulation and structural health monitoring"; PNRR ECOSISTER "Ecosystem for sustainable transition in Emilia-Romagna" - Spoke 1: Materials for Sustainability and ecological transition; DIGIBRIDGE - "Integrated digital tools for structural monitoring, diagnostics and predictive maintenance of bridges and viaducts"; CASA - "Circular and sustainable concretes with recycled materials from local supply chains." She has also carried out applied research activities within research agreements with public and private bodies, such as the Regional Agency for Territorial Safety and Civil Protection (support in technical-scientific activities aimed at prevention, planning and management of emergencies related to seismic risk), the Italian Department of Civil Protection and the ReLUIS Consortium ("Risk Maps and Seismic Damage Scenarios (MARS), WP4. Task 4.3 - Residential Vulnerability; Task 4.7 - Individual and Systemic Infrastructure Vulnerability"; "Application of the agreement ex art.15 L.7-8-90 between CSLLPP and ReLUIS, No. 241 - ReLUIS bridges: WP2 – Application of guidelines to experimental road sections; WP4 - Tests on structural and/or special components"). She was the winner of the University Call for Research 2023 - Action A, with the project proposal “REPARO - Optimization of REPairing interventions on structures and infrAstructures based on the numerical pRevisiOn of their residual service life."

She is author of about a hundred scientific publications, both at national and international level, and she is a reviewer for major international journals. In 2016 she received the Department award for top-SNIP publication in the Civil Engineering and Architecture Area 2015-2016. Member of fib Task Group 7.7 "Sustainable concrete masonry components and Structures" and fib Task Group TG2.3 "Fire design of concrete structures " (COM2 Analysis and design).
