Profile
Paolo Mora is Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Parma and Director of the Department of Ophthalmology at Parma University Hospital. He also serves as Director of the Residency Program in Ophthalmology and President of the Bachelor's Degree Program in Orthoptics and Ophthalmic Assistance at the University of Parma.
After graduating summa cum laude in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Parma, he completed his residency in Ophthalmology and subsequently obtained a PhD in Medical Research from the University of Lausanne (Switzerland), where he conducted translational research on ocular drug delivery systems.
His clinical practice encompasses both anterior and posterior segment surgery, with particular expertise in vitreoretinal surgery, ocular inflammatory diseases, inherited retinal disorders, retinal vascular diseases, and cataract surgery. His international training includes appointments at the Jules Gonin Eye Hospital (Lausanne), the Hôpital National des Quinze-Vingts (Paris), the University Hospital of Dijon, the Hédi Raïs Institute of Ophthalmology (Tunis), and the University Eye Hospital in Frankfurt.
His research activity focuses on inherited retinal diseases, ocular inflammation and uveitis, retinal neuroprotection, retinal imaging, ocular pharmacology, and vitreoretinal surgery. He has served as Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator in numerous investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical studies and has established long-standing collaborations with leading European ophthalmic research centers.
According to Scopus, he has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed scientific publications, receiving over 1,200 citations with an h-index of 20. His work has appeared in leading international journals including Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, Acta Ophthalmologica, Graefe's Archive for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Journal of Translational Medicine, Brain, and Current Eye Research.
Professor Mora is actively involved in international scientific publishing as a peer reviewer for more than twenty Q1 ophthalmology journals and serves on the Academic Editorial Board of BMC Ophthalmology. Since 2018, he has been an elected member of the Executive Board of the Italian Society of Ocular Inflammatory and Autoimmune Diseases (SIUMIO).
His research has been supported by competitive national and international grants, including funding from the Global Ophthalmology Awards Program (Bayer), and he has received several scientific awards, including the SOI Best Paper Award and the G.B. Bietti Foundation Award presented at the annual meeting of the European Vision and Eye Research Society (EVER).
