STUDIES:

Degree in Biological Sciences summa cum laude, on July 18, 1978 at the University of Parma; member of the Biologist National Register (Italy) since July 3, 1981; post-degree diploma at the Medical School of Microbiology and Virology summa cum laude, on July 5, 1984 at the University of Parma.

PRESENT POSITION:

Associate Professor of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology (SSD MEDS-03/A) referring to the Department of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Parma, Italy. Diagnostic activity: in charge of the Basic Unit of “Epidemiology and laboratory diagnosis of respiratory and enteric virus infections by advanced laboratory methods” at the Virology Unit of the Department of Diagnostics of the University-Hospital of Parma, Italy. At the same Unit, she is the representative for research and training; she is supervisor for safety and health in the workplace, and for the processing of personal data. Since November 1, 2023 to the present, senior manager (temporary assigned) of the Virology Unit of the Department of Diagnostics of the University-Hospital of Parma, Italy.

PREVIOUS POSITIONS:

Assistant biologist at the Parma U.S.L. N.4, Italy (07/02/1987 - 08/05/1996), Leading assistant biologist (12/06/1996 - 03/15/2001), diagnostic activity as Expert Case Manager (since 01/01/2000 to 2008), then diagnostic activity of High Expertise (since 2008 to 2010) at the Virology Unit of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of the University-Hospital of Parma, Assistant Professor referring to the Microbiology Section of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Parma (16/03/2001 – 31/10/2006).

Supervisor and coordinator of scientific experimental works and thesis at the Degree Courses (Biological Sciences at the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences, Biomedical Laboratory Technics), at the post-graduate Medical School of Microbiology and Virology, at the PhD course in Microbiology and Virology and at the PhD course in Surgical Sciences and Applied Microbiology.

SCIENTIFIC TRAINING IN FOREIGN INSTITUTIONS:

Several stages at the “Laboratoire de Biochimie de la Différenciation” Institut J. Monod, Paris 7 University (Paris, France) since 1987 to 2001. Co-organizer and lecturer of the “Colloque Blaise Pascal” at the Institut J. Monod, Paris 7 University (Paris, France) in 2001, with the participation of the Nobel Prize François Jacob.

RESEARCH TOPICS:

The main research topics are focused on:

-cellular factors that are involved during viral infection, with particular regard to cytoskeleton, nuclear matrix and related complexes, cell cycle (cytomegalovirus, adenovirus, influenza virus);

-the study of: epigenetic mechanisms regulating viral (human cytomegalovirus) gene expression;

-functional compartmentalization of viral (human cytomegalovirus) proteins; functional proteomics; -study of human cytomegalovirus polymorphic genes and related products as virulence factors and phylogenetic analysis of specific genotype associations of human cytomegalovirus clinical strains in “at risk” categories of subjects;

-study of humoral and cell-mediated anti-human cytomegalovirus immune responses in patients with autoimmune diseases.

-study of cellular mRNA and micro-RNA in cells infected by beta-herpesviruses (human cytomegalovirus and human herpesvirus-6).

RESEARCH PROJECTS:

Since 1998, involvement in research projects granted by the local University (FIL) and in national research projects (“Progetti di Ricerca di Rilevante Interesse Nazionale”, PRIN).

Coordinator of a scientific project granted by the italian CNR.

Sub-Unit leader researcher (Workpackage 4) in the frame of the “Programma di ricerca Regione-Università 2010-2012”: “A tailored approach to the immune-monitoring and clinical management of viral and autoimmune diseases”.

Unit leader researcher in the frame of the granted project PRIN 2015: “Impatto dell'infezione da virus a DNA sullo sviluppo di patologie autoimmuni: focus sulla sclerosi sistemica”.

PUBLICATIONS:

Author or co-author of more than 90 scientific papers; she has presented more than 200 scientific studies at national and international congresses.

PROFESSIONAL SOCIETIES AFFILIATION:

She has been member of the Italian Society of Microbiology (until 2013) and of the Italian Clinical Microbiologists Association (until 2011). She is member of the European Society for Virology (at the present)

KNOWLEDGE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES:

Good knowledge (spoken and written language) of English and French.
