Dr. Alessio Bosio has obtained a degree in Physics at the University of Parma in 1986 with a thesis entitled "Solar Cells in a Thin Film Base CuInSe2 on Low Cost Substrates" with thesis supervisor Professor Nicola Romeo.
From 1986 to 1990, he won a renewable fellowship which enabled him to continue the work in the laboratory "Thin Films" directed by prof. Nicola Romeo at the Department of Physics. During this time he contributed to research some topics, continuing his work on low cost thin films solar cell, and thin film electroluminescent devices, as numerous publications on international journals and participation in national and international conferences attest. In particular he studied thin film photovoltaic devices based on CdTe/CdS and CuInSe2/CdS and thin film electroluminescent where the active material is ZnS:Mn. In the first case he has reached device efficiencies of 13% for both materials while for electroluminescent devices he studied the dielectric materials, such as insulating oxides and nitrides, necessary to realize the device. In these years he won a concourse and became university researcher.
Among the most important scientific works in which he is engaged is to mention the research on the solar cells CuInSe2/CdS and CdTe / CdS with efficiencies in excess of 15%. One of the highest efficiency/cost ratio has been reached with this devices.
In recent years he acquired also considerable experience on the techniques of thin film deposition such as:
a) deposition of semiconductor and ceramic materials by magnetron R.F. Sputtering, d.c. and pulsed d.c.
b) deposition of compounds by electron beam gun;
c) deposition of semiconductors with high crystalline quality used as absorber in photovoltaic devices with the innovative close-spaced-sublimation technique.
Since 1990 is part, as researcher, of the National Institute of Physics of Matter.
He participated in several research projects (Joule) on photovoltaic devices within the Framework Program of the European Community.
He participated at numerous research projects international meetings presenting reports and scientific results. He also participated at many international conferences. In some of these he was an invited speaker. Since 2000, he was personally involved in the design and engineering of a fully automated in-line machine for the industrial production of photovoltaic modules based on CdTe/CdS technology. The scientific work of Dr. Bosio is attested by more than 45 articles in international journals, many articles on books and by the participation in approximately 35 international conferences on photovoltaic devices.
