Education and Academic Career
Alessio Bosio graduated in Physics from the University of Parma in 1985, with an experimental thesis entitled “Solar Cells Based on CuInSe₂ Thin Films on Low-Cost Substrates”. Following a post-degree appointment (April 1986–February 1990), he worked as Graduate Technician (February 1990–June 2000) and subsequently as Aggregate Professor (June 2000–February 2022) at the University of Parma. In January 2020 he obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification for Full Professor in Experimental Physics of Matter. Since February 2022 he has been Associate Professor at the Department of Mathematical, Physical and Computer Sciences, University of Parma.
Research Activities and Expertise
Prof. Bosio has extensive experience in semiconductor thin-film growth, materials characterization and photovoltaic and optoelectronic device technologies. Since 2010 he has headed the Thin Film Laboratory (ThiFiLab) at the University of Parma. His research has addressed CuInSe₂/CdS, Cu(In,Ga)Se₂/CdS and CdTe/CdS solar cells, including scalable processes, contacts and interfaces, and more recently emerging chalcogenide absorbers such as Sb₂Se₃ and FeS₂. Current interests also include Ga₂O₃-based solar-blind UV-C photodetectors and NiO/Ga₂O₃ heterojunction diodes, with attention to defects, charge transport, interfaces and device performance.
His expertise includes RF, DC and pulsed-DC magnetron sputtering, reactive sputtering, electron-beam evaporation, close-spaced sublimation (CSS), thin-film processing and electrical/optoelectronic characterization. His work on CdTe/CdS and CuInSe₂/CdS technologies contributed to devices achieving conversion efficiencies exceeding 16%, as reported in his earlier curriculum.

Industrial Experience, Entrepreneurship and Technology Transfer
Prof. Bosio was among the founders of Solar Systems and Equipment S.r.l. (SSE), which subsequently established Arendi S.p.A. Between 2003 and 2010, he contributed to the transfer of CdTe thin-film photovoltaic processes developed at the University of Parma from laboratory research to industrial photovoltaic module manufacturing.
He was also a founding member of SpoT S.r.l. (Smart Photovoltaic Technologies), a University of Parma spin-off, and served as its President from 2017 to 2023. SpoT develops proprietary diagnostic and characterization methodologies to identify performance losses and support predictive diagnostics in large-scale, underperforming photovoltaic plants.
Patents and Awards
His official curriculum records five national and five international patents. He was co-inventor, with Nicola Romeo and Alessandro Romeo, of “Metodo per la formazione di un back-contact non rettificante in celle solari a film sottile di CdTe/CdS” (PCT/IT2007/000469; WO2009001389A1), filed by Solar Systems and Equipment S.r.l. The invention received the award for the best Italian invention in renewable energies for 2007, promoted by the Chamber of Commerce of Lucca.
Teaching, Institutional Responsibilities and Scientific Service
Prof. Bosio teaches in Physics and Materials Science degree programmes, including Introduction to Materials Science, Materials Science and Physical Technologies for Renewable Energies. He serves as Vice-President of the degree programmes in Materials Science and Technology and Functional and Sustainable Materials, and has responsibilities for curricular internships and outgoing career orientation. His earlier CV reports supervision of five PhD students and more than 50 Bachelor’s and Master’s theses.
