Barbara Campanini was born in Parma on July 3rd 1973.

In 1998 she graduated with honors in Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Parma with a thesis on "Purification of mu-calpain and m-calpain. Potential application to the quality control of meat” carried out at the Stazione Sperimentale per l’Industria delle Conserve Animali.

In 2002 she received her PhD in Molecular Biology and Pathology at the University of Parma with a thesis on "Structural determinants of the stability of the pyridoxal 5'-phosphate-dependent enzyme O-acetylserine sulfhydrylase".

Between 2000 and 2002 she carried out research activity at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Oklahoma (Norman, USA) and at the Laboratory for Fluorescence Dynamics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Urbana-Champaign, USA).

Since 2016 she is Associate Professor of Biochemistry (SSD BIO/10) at the Department of Food and Drug Department, University of Parma.

She was the tutor of more than 30 students for Master degree and PhD.

From 2006 to 2012 she was a member of the Teacher Board for the PhD Course in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Parma.

Since 2013 she a member of the Teacher Board for the PhD Course in Drugs, Biomolecules and Health Products, University of Parma.

She held courses within Summer Schools dedicated to training of PhD students; "Recombinant drugs: recombinant protein expression for pharmaceutical applications". "ULLA Summer School", Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Parma, 2011; "Enzyme inhibition in drug discovery". "ULLA Summer School", Faculty of Pharmacy, University Paris Sud, France, 2015; 29a Riunione Nazionale "A. Castellani" of PhD students in Biochemical Sciences. “Molecular transitions in biochemistry: enzyme kinetics”. Brallo di Pregola, 2017.

She acted as reviewer for many international journals, included Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemical Journal and Accounts of Chemical Research.

Since 2018 she is member of the Editorial Board of the international journal "Scientific Reports", “Frontiers in Chemistry” and “Frontiers in Molecular Biosciences”.

From 1998 to 2018 she has published 6 book chapters, 60 papers on international peer-reviewed journals. She participated to more than 70 international conferences. H-index: 20, total citations: 1024.

Lines of research

BC is interested in the characterization of enzymes, their interaction, regulation and inhibition as a therapeutic strategy. She is expert in the study of enzymes dependent on pyridoxal 5’-phosphate, that include most of the enzymes involved in amino acid metabolism both in mammals and bacteria. Presently her research focuses on the study of the bacterial enzymes involved in cysteine biosynthesis and their exploitation as target for innovative antibiotics. She is also involved in the biochemical characterization of the receptors that in Gram positive bacteria are able to bind Hb and capture heme and in the characterization of human PLP-dependent enzymes as drug targets.
