About

Giovanni Sogari is an Associate Professor in “Consumer Behavior” at the Department of Food and Drug at the University of Parma, Italy. He was awarded an MSc in Food Science in 2010 and a Ph.D. in Agriculture Economics in 2015. From 2017 to 2020, he was granted a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship and he carried out his project “CONSUMEHealth. Using consumer science to improve healthy eating habits” at the Department of Applied Economics and Management of Cornell University in the US. His studies lie at the nexus of psychology, sensory analysis, and experimental economics to better inform policy-makers, private companies, and the general public on eating behavior. Dr. Sogari is also an active member in various scientific societies including the Italian Association of Agricultural and Applied Economics (AIEAA), the European Association of Agricultural Economists (EAAE), and the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). Since 2020, Dr.Sogari has been hired by direct call as a Researcher at the Department of Food and Drug, University of Parma, in the field of the scientific disciplinary field AGR/01 (Agricultural Economics).

In 2020, he was awarded the position of Expert Scientist within the Guest Scientists Program at the EUROPEAN FOOD SAFETY AUTHORITY (EFSA) in Parma, Italy, where he carried out his research activities at the Communication Engagement & Cooperation (COMCO) Department.

From 2017-2020 he was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship (grant agreement No 749514) with his project: "CONSUMEHealth. Using consumer science to improve healthy eating habits."

From 2017 to 2019 he was a Visiting fellow at the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University, Ithaca, USA.

In 2018, Dr. Sogari obtained the National Scientific Qualification (ASN) to the positions of Professor of Second Chair in the Competitive Sector: 07/A1 Area 07, scientific-disciplinary field AGR/01 (Agricultural Economics and Estimation).

From 2015 to 2020 he was a postdoc research fellow at the at the Department of Food and Drug, University of Parma. During this period he carried out teaching activities for the "Master in Agribusiness & Food Management" (2014-2017), the Master in Culture Organization and Marketing of Territorial Enogastronomy (2014-2020), and the Master in "Organic Production: from Field to Marketing" (2020).

In 2015, he obtained the title of Ph.D. in Agribusiness Economics "Agrisystem" at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Piacenza, Italy, with the thesis "Consumer preferences and attitude for wine attributes: the case of sustainable labeling."

Research areas

The research activity, with participation in European and national projects, focuses mainly on the analysis of consumer behavior of food products and eating lifestyles. From 2017 to 2020 I was the recipient of a European competitive H2020 Marie Curie fellowship with the project "CONSUMEHealth. Using consumer science to improve healthy eating habits" (www.giovannisogari.com). In the last few years, I have also participated in other European research projects such as: • PrimeFish (2015-2019, Horizon 2020, Developing Innovative Market Orientated Prediction Toolbox to Strengthen the Economic Sustainability and Competitiveness of European Seafood on Local and Global markets, http: //www.primefish.eu) • PreSto GMO ERA-net project (2013-2015, 7th FP, Preparatory steps towards a GMO research ERA-Net) • PEGASUS. Public Perception of Genetically modified Animals – (2009-2012, 7th FP) My publications are mainly placed in international scientific journals on applied economics, marketing, nutrition, sustainability and consumer behavior.

  • Promoting Healthy and Sustainable Eating in University students: two case studies

    Partecipazione ad un webinar riferito a "Food and Conscious Consumption" organizzato nell'ambito del Work Package 5 dell'Alleanza EU GREEN, in cui sono state presentate le attività di ricerca in corso che coinvolgono gli studenti universitari di Parma e in particolare la mensa. Le attività sono condotte dall'Unità di Nutrizione Umana del Dip, Scienze degli Alimenti e del Farmaco e finanziate dal PNRR (Onfoods).
