Barbara Caselli is an architect and Assistant Professor (non-tenure track) in Urban and Regional Planning at the Department of Engineering and Architecture, University of Parma, where she teaches “Urban planning assessment techniques” and where she is currently conducting research on the topics of integration between urban planning and active mobility systems, urban regeneration with a focus on solutions for adaptation to climate change, and strategic planning and accessibility in inland and marginal areas.

She received her PhD (Curriculum Urban Studies) in 2017 at the University of Parma (Italy). Her doctoral thesis centred on the study of urban shrinkage processes in medium and small sized Italian municipalities, with a focus on land take phenomena. Subsequently, she held a fellowship and a research grant on the topics of post-earthquake planning in smaller historic centres and landscape management and planning, with a focus on Apennine areas, delving into GIS analysis techniques. Since 2017 she has been lecturing in Master's degree courses and is the holder of the module "Construction of a GIS data model applied to the city" within the 2nd level Postgraduate Master course in Urban Regeneration at the University of Parma, of which she is also head of the organisational secretariat. In 2021 she was a lecturer in "Urban and Regional Planning Theory" at the School of Architecture and Built Environment, Univeristy of Rwanda.

She currently coordinates a research unit within the PRIN2022 project "GO-IN! diGital platfOrm for INner areas", and task 3.2 "Platform for assessing active mobility" within the NRRP’s research program "Sustainable Mobility Centre (MOST)" - Spoke 9 "Urban Mobility". She also participates in the "Ecosystem for Sustainable Transition in Emilia-Romagna" - Spoke 4 "Smart Mobility, housing and energy solutions for a carbon-neutral society", and other applied research activities within the framework of conventions or collaboration agreements with public and private entities, including the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Regional Observatory for Landscape Quality.

She collaborates with the "Inland Areas and Surroundings" working group of the Italian Society of Urban Planners (SIU), the National Network of Young Researchers for Inland Areas and the inter-university network Laboratorio del Cammino. In addition, she is a member of CICCREI - Interdepartmental Research Center for Construction, Conservation and Regeneration of Buildings and Infrastructure, University of Parma, and of the departmental laboratory UNIPR City-Lab.

She is the author of several national and international scientific publications and has carried out scientific and organizational coordination activities in national and international conferences, seminars and workshops. In 2023 she achieved the National Scientific Habilitation as Associate Professor (Italy) in Urban and landscape planning and design (08/F1).
