Carlo Altini, PhD, is Full Professor of History of Philosophy at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Director of the editorial series "Archivio Thomas Hobbes. Testi e studi" (Casa editrice Leo S. Olschki, Firenze) and "Straussiana. Studi e testi" (Edizioni ETS, Pisa). He is member of the Administration Board of University of Modena and Reggio Emilia; chair of the graduate course "Scienze pedagogiche" at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia; co-director of editorial board of the journal “Filosofia politica” (Società editrice Il Mulino, Bologna); member of steering committee of the “Consulta Nazionale di Filosofia”; member of scientific committee of PhD School in "Human Sciences" of University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and of Italian PhD School in "Religious Studies". From 2013 he is director of the scientific committee of the "Convegno nazionale dei dottorati di ricerca in filosofia". He is also "Socio ordinario" of “Accademia Nazionale di Scienze, Lettere e Arti di Modena” and director of "Laboratorio sul pensiero critico" (Department of Education and Humanities, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia). He has taught History of Political Philosophy at the University of Siena in the years 2003-2006 and was scientific director of the Fondazione San Carlo (Modena) - and of the PhD School in Humanities of the Fondazione San Carlo - in the years 2009-2022. He has held lectures and seminars at the Universities of Angers, Barcelona, Bari, Bologna, Buenos Aires, Cordoba (Argentina), Ferrara, Firenze, Jerusalem, Lausanne, Macerata, Milano, Milano "Cattolica", Milano "San Raffaele", Napoli "Federico II", Napoli "L'Orientale", Padova, Paris Sorbonne, Parma, Pavia, Perugia, Pisa, Roma La Sapienza, Roma Tor Vergata, Roma Tre, Salerno, Santa Catarina (Brasile), Tilburg, Torino, Trento, Trieste, Udine, Uppsala, Urbino, Venezia "Ca' Foscari" and at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris), Max-Weber-Kolleg (Universität Erfurt), Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (Madrid), John Cabot University (Roma), Scuola Normale Superiore (Pisa), Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Storici (Napoli), Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (Pisa), Istituto Nazionale di Studi sul Rinascimento (Firenze), Accademia delle Scienze (Torino), Fondazione Mario Tobino (Lucca), Fondazione Studi Alfieriani (Asti) and Gabinetto Vieusseux (Firenze). In collaboration with Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (Paris) and University of Erfurt, he has organized 9 international conferences on issues (such as "interpretation", "historiography", "tradition" and "modernity") related to the methodology of research in the humanities. In his research he has dealt with the origins, the development and the crisis of philosophical and political modernity through the analysis of some authors of the Early Modern Age (Machiavelli, Hobbes, Harrington, Spinoza) and of Twentieth Century (Carl Schmitt, Oswald Spengler, György Lukács, Karl Löwith, Alexandre Kojève, Gershom Scholem, Eric Voegelin and in particular Leo Strauss, of which he is one of the leading international specialists). He has also reconstructed the history and the theory of some philosophical and political categories of modernity, as democracy, power, sovereignty, progress, utopia, potentia/actus, machinery, human rights, war/peace.
