Psicologo Psicoterapeuta, Dottore di Ricerca in Neuroscienze, Ricercatore post dottorato presso il Dipartimento di Medicina e Chirurgia dell'Università di Parma (IT). La sua attività di ricerca è focalizzata sui meccanismi neurofisiologici alla base dell'apprendimento per imitazione, e della plasticità del sistema nervoso centrale in pazienti adulti con lesioni cerebrali acquisite o bambini con disordini del neurosviluppo. Esperto di analisi dei dati fMRI, neuropsicologia clinica, e riabilitazione neuromotoria. Dopo aver conseguito la laurea magistrale in Psicologia dello Sviluppo presso l'Università di Messina, ha ottenuto il titolo di Dottore di Ricerca in Neuroscienze presso l'Università di Parma, il diploma di Master di II Livello in Neuropsicologia Clinica presso l'Università Europea di Roma, e il Diploma di Specializzazione in Psicoterapia a orientamento Neuropsicologia dello sviluppo presso l'Accademina di Neuropsicologia dello Sviluppo (ANSVI).

Psychologist and Psychotherapist, PhD in Neuroscience, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Parma, Italy. His research focuses on the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying imitation learning and central nervous system plasticity in adult patients with acquired brain injuries and children with neurodevelopmental disorders. He is an expert in fMRI data analysis, clinical neuropsychology, and neuromotor rehabilitation. After obtaining a Master’s degree in Developmental Psychology from the University of Messina, he earned a PhD in Neuroscience from the University of Parma, a Second-Level Master’s degree in Clinical Neuropsychology from the European University of Rome, and a Specialization Diploma in Psychotherapy from the Academy of Developmental Neuropsychology (ANSVI).

RESEARCH FUNDING AND SCIENTIFIC INDEPENDENCE

Principal Investigator – Italian Ministry of Health Starting Grant SG-2019-12370506 (€130,000)

Project: Effectiveness of Action Observation Therapy based on Virtual Reality technology in motor rehabilitation of paretic stroke patients: a randomized clinical trial.

The project was a multicentre randomized controlled trial investigating the behavioural and neural effects of Action Observation Therapy combined with virtual reality in post-stroke upper-limb rehabilitation.

As Principal Investigator, I was responsible for the scientific design of the project, coordination of the experimental and neuroimaging activities, data analysis, scientific dissemination, and publication strategy.

SELECTED SCIENTIFIC OUTPUT AND INTERNATIONAL DISSEMINATION

Author of peer-reviewed scientific publications in international journals including Stroke, NeuroImage, NeuroImage: Clinical, Brain Communications, Cortex, Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair, Human Brain Mapping, Brain Topography, Scientific Reports, and Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews.

Recent research has addressed cortico-cerebellar connectivity in action observation and imitation, diffusion MRI characterization of motor networks, Action Observation Therapy and virtual reality after stroke, motor learning, and neuroplasticity in cerebral palsy.

My work has been presented at major international scientific meetings, including the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS), the Organization for Human Brain Mapping (OHBM), the Society for Neuroscience (SfN), and the European Academy of Childhood-onset Disability (EACD), through oral and poster presentations.

Linee di ricerca

1. Neural mechanisms of action observation and action representation
My research has contributed to the characterization of cortical and subcortical networks involved in observing and executing complex actions. Using univariate and multivariate fMRI approaches, I investigated the representation of grip type, action goals, biological motion, and complex hand-object manipulation within parieto-frontal networks.

2. Cerebellar and subcortical contribution to motor cognition
A major focus of my recent research is the role of the cerebellum, basal ganglia, and thalamus in action observation, imitation, and motor learning. My studies have combined task-based fMRI, effective connectivity, multivariate analyses, and diffusion tractography to characterize cortico-subcortical and cerebello-cortical action networks.

3. Neuroplasticity and Action Observation Treatment in cerebral palsy
My work has shown that motor experience and individual motor impairment shape the functional organization of the Action Observation Network in children with unilateral cerebral palsy. I contributed to the development and testing of Action Observation treatments based on pathological motor models and to randomized clinical studies of rehabilitation in paediatric cerebral palsy.

4. Translational neuroscience and post-stroke motor rehabilitation
As PI of a Ministry of Health-funded randomized controlled trial, I investigated Action Observation Therapy combined with virtual reality in patients with stroke. This research demonstrated the clinical potential of integrating action observation and immersive motor training to promote upper-limb recovery.
