Born in 1985, he graduated with honours from the University of Bologna in 2008 and obtained a PhD in criminal law in 2012 from the University of Parma, where he was a Research Fellow in criminal law from February 2014 to January 2016. During this period he did study abroad at the Ludwig Maximilian Universität in Munich, at the Queen Mary University in London and at the Max-Planck-Institut für ausländisches und internationales Strafrecht in Freiburg im Breisgau and in the winter of 2010 he was an trainee at the European Court of Human Rights.
From 2012 to 2015, he practised law at the Bologna Bar. He was appointed Ordinary Magistrate by Ministerial Decree of 18 January 2016 and served as a Judge at the criminal section of the Court of Modena until December 2019, when he took up his post as a Researcher at the University of Parma. In December 2022, having obtained the National Scientific Qualification in 2018, he took office as an Associate Professor. In 2025 he obtained the National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor.
He is a member of the editorial boards of the Rivista italiana di medicina legale e del diritto in campo sanitario and of the journal Diritto di difesa, of the Committee of Assessors of the journal Trust e attività fiduciarie, of the Committee of Reviewers of the journal Legislazione penale, as well as of the Scientific Committees of the journals Sistema penale and Ante Litteram.
On the occasion of the 20th World Congress of the Association internationale de droit pénal held in Rome in November 2019, he was elected President of the Young Penalists Section, a position he held until the 21st World Congress held in Paris in June 2024, where he was appointed as a member of the Association's Scientific Committee.
