Nicola Bruno was born in Trieste on October 14, 1961. In 1985 he graduated in Philosophy from the University of Trieste, and in 1990 he obtained a Ph.D. in Human Experimental Psychology from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, USA. He held teaching and research positions at Cornell, at the University of Virginia, at Southampton University (UK), and at the University of Padua. Since 2000 he has been Full Professor of General Psychology, first in Trieste and, since 2008, at the University of Parma.
His scientific production includes more than 200 publications, comprising articles in international peer-reviewed journals, chapters in internationally distributed edited volumes, edited books, and monographs. His works have received more than 3,500 citations (source: Google Scholar, H-index: 32). He has written six books: La percezione multisensoriale (Il Mulino – Itinerari, 2010; with F. Pavani and M. Zampini), Perception: A Multisensory Perspective (Oxford University Press, 2018; with F. Pavani), Introduzione alla psicologia della percezione visiva: Come facciamo a vedere (Il Mulino – Itinerari, 2021), ΔΙ/I = k, La Legge del Desiderio (Il Mulino – Formule per leggere il mondo, 2023), A Conceptual History of Psychophysics: Ernst Weber's Law of Desire (Palgrave MacMillan, 2024), and Lezioni di psicologia: Intersezioni fra concetti e storia (Il Mulino – Itinerari, 2025).
He is currently Associate Editor of Frontiers in ICT, Frontiers in Psychology, Frontiers in Digital Humanities, and Frontiers in Perception; he is also a member of the Editorial Board of Acta Psychologica. He served as President of the three-year Bachelor’s Degree Program in “Experimental Psychology and Psychobiology,” Faculty of Psychology, University of Trieste (2001–2003); Director of the Department of Psychology at the University of Trieste (2004–2006); Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Parma (November 2009–2011); and President of the Specialist Degree Program in “Psychobiology and Cognitive Neuroscience” at the University of Parma. He is a member of the faculty board of the Ph.D. program in Neuroscience at the University of Parma.
Currently, his main teaching activity is directed at students enrolled in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in Psychology, for which he teaches the courses “Introduction to Psychology: Concepts and History” and “Perception and Psychophysics,” respectively. He also regularly teaches General Psychology courses for students in Medicine and the health professions.
