I am an Assistant Professor in the History of Ancient Philosophy (RTD-A) at the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences and Cultural Industries, University of Parma. My research focuses primarily on Plato and the Platonic tradition, as well as the relationship between philosophy, particularly cosmology, and mathematics.

After completing a joint PhD at the University of Cagliari and the University of Cologne, I was a postdoctoral fellow in Cologne, and subsequently within the ERC project “PROTEUS” (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and University of Milan), the “COSMOS” project (University of Milan), and the FIS “Ancient Science, Ancient Philosophy” (University of Rome Tor Vergata). I hold the Italian National Scientific Habilitation as Associate Professor in the History of Philosophy (11/C5).

I am involved in several national and international research projects on ancient philosophy and the history of ancient science, including the FIS project “Ancient Science, Ancient Philosophy: The Philosophical Foundation of Science in Antiquity”, the project “MARe – Mathematics in Aristotle Revisited”, and the “COSMOS Network – History & Philosophy of Cosmology”. I also maintain ongoing collaborations with Italian and international research groups in ancient philosophy, such as Ancient Philosophy in Turin, Antike und Spätantike Philosophie at the University of Cologne, and the research group on ancient science at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Lines of research

My research focuses primarily on Plato and the Platonic tradition. In particular, I examine the relationship between philosophy, mathematics, and cosmology, with special attention to the epistemological, methodological, and psychagogical roles of mathematics in the development of philosophical knowledge. This research proceeds along three main lines: (1) Plato’s dialogues, especially the Republic, Timaeus, Theaetetus, and Sophist; (2) the nature and structure of the World Soul, the relationship between space and time, the generation of the cosmos, and the status and function of mathematical entities in late antique Platonism; (3) mathematics and cosmology in the post-Hellenistic period, with particular focus on Nicomachus of Gerasa’s Introductio arithmetica, on which I am currently writing a monograph.
