Research Activity
The research activity mainly focuses on the following topics.
- Analysis and optimization of extrusion processes for light and ultra-light alloys, including the experimental, numerical, and analytical prediction of process defects and microstructural evolution. The work involves advanced process modeling and validation through experimental case studies, numerical–experimental monitoring and assessment of the effects of forced cooling using liquid nitrogen, and numerical–experimental analysis of extrusion die service life. Additional activities include the development of new material characterization tests, benchmarking of FEM codes for process modeling, additive manufacturing of inserts with conformal cooling channels using Selective Laser Melting (SLM), investigation of multilayer anti-wear coatings, and multi-objective optimization of processes and components.
- A hybrid approach is employed for process parameter optimization, combining finite element simulations with machine learning algorithms to predict the microstructure and mechanical properties of extruded profiles made from AA6XXX series aluminum alloys.
- Recrystallization models are also developed for FEM simulations of innovative solid-state processes such as Friction Stir Welding (FSW) and Friction Stir Extrusion (FSE), which represent sustainable manufacturing solutions for modern industrial applications.
- The research also includes the characterization of the flow stress behavior of metallic materials using a torsion testing machine. This activity involves experimental analysis, acquisition of flow stress data under different process conditions, calibration of the Hensel–Spittel flow stress model, optimization of experimental constants, and validation of the developed model through numerical–experimental comparisons.
- Another research topic concerns the optimization of laser texturing processes for lithium-ion battery (LIB) current collectors to improve their performance and durability. This work includes numerical simulations and experimental characterization through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy, and mechanical adhesion tests.
