Luca Capaldo is a Tenure Track Researcher hired under the “Departments of Excellence” project (COMP-R) at the Department of Chemical, Life and Environmental Sustainability Sciences (SCVSA) of the University of Parma.

He teaches the courses “Chemistry and Technology of Polymers and Laboratory” (L-27), “Polymer Science” (L-SC.MAT.), and “Development and Management of Industrial Chemical Processes and Emerging Technologies” (LM-54).

He currently serves as the researchers’ representative on the SCVSA Department Council, is a member of the Joint Teaching-Student Committee, a member and lecturer within the PhD School in Chemical Sciences, and a member of the Scientific Committee for Area 03.

His research activity focuses on combining synthetic methodologies with emerging technologies for the preparation of high-value-added fine chemicals. He is currently the Principal Investigator of the SynCat Lab research group at the SCVSA Department.

Luca Capaldo was born in 1991 in Milan, Italy. He studied chemistry at the University of Pavia and obtained his  M.Sc. in 2015 (advisor: Prof. M. Fagnoni) with a dissertation on “Chemistry for technologies: LEDs and organic superconductors” after a visiting period as an Erasmus Trainee in the group of Prof. Luisa De Cola (ISIS, Strasbourg).

In the same year, Luca started his Ph.D. in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences (advisor: Prof. M. Fagnoni) at the University of Pavia, during which he spent a visiting period in the group of Prof. Tehshik P. Yoon at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Luca defended his thesis on “Novel Approaches for Ecosustainable Synthesis” (highest honors) in February 2019.

After a postdoc with Prof. Davide Ravelli at the same University, during which he develop electrophotocatalytic methodologies for cross-dehydrogenative couplings, he joined the group of Prof. Timothy Noël as Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow (Individual Felloship). During this time, he worked on the development of novel photocatalytic approaches in batch and flow via Hydrogen-Atom Transfer (HAT) and Halogen-Atom Transfer (XAT).

In late 2023, he started his independent career at the University of Parma, where he founded the SynCat Lab. His research focuses on the synthesis of fine chemicals via enabling technologies, including photocatalysis, electrochemistry, mechanochemistry and flow chemistry.

He is also Associate Editor for the Journal of Flow Chemistry.

Lines of research

The mission of our research group, the SynCat Lab, is to integrate new chemical concepts with advanced technologies to make synthesis more efficient and sustainable. Our goal is to transform synthetic chemistry into a truly multidisciplinary discipline, capable of accelerating the preparation of molecules of pharmaceutical and agrochemical interest.
