He graduated with honours in Humanities from the University of Bologna and, in 1999, obtained a PhD in Art History from the same university, with a dissertation on aqueducts and fountains commissioned by the papal government in the Marche, Romagna and Bologna. Between 1999 and 2001, he further developed these research themes as part of a postdoctoral programme, while also obtaining a postgraduate Diploma from the School of Specialisation in Art History and the Minor Arts, with a dissertation on cartography in the Bolognese area. From 2002 to 2005, he held a research fellowship in Art History at the University of Bologna, devoted to the study of treatises on military architecture preserved in the city’s museums and University Library.
Since 2005, he has taught continuously in the fields of History of Architecture, Modern and Contemporary Art History, and History of Drawing and Graphic Arts at the Universities of Bologna, including its Cesena and Ravenna campuses, Venice and Urbino.
He has participated in national and international research and cataloguing projects. In 2016, he was a chercheur invité at the Institut national d’histoire de l’art (INHA) in Paris, where he conducted research on French fountains between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In 2017, he was also awarded a research fellowship in the field of architectural history at the University of Edinburgh. He has contributed to the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani and the Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon, writing entries on architects, sculptors and decorators.
In 2017, he obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification for appointment as Associate Professor in the academic field ICAR/18 – History of Architecture, now CEAR-11/A. He is currently a researcher in this field at the Department of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Parma.
