Cristina Castracani is an Adjunct Professor and Technical Officer at the Department of Chemistry, Life Sciences and Environmental Sustainability of the University of Parma. Her research focuses on animal behaviour, primarily in the field of entomology, and on biodiversity monitoring, with particular interest in invasive alien species. Her research integrates traditional scientific approaches with Citizen Science, a research approach that actively involves volunteers in the production of scientific knowledge. Alongside her research and teaching activities, she is engaged in science communication and public engagement, developing initiatives that involve students, citizens and local communities in biodiversity monitoring, awareness and conservation.

Research areas

Research activities are primarily conducted in the fields of zoology and entomology and are structured around three main research areas:

Animal Behaviour and Insect Ecology

Study of animal behaviour and intra- and interspecific interactions in insects, with particular emphasis on social insects, using experimental approaches and observations under both natural and controlled conditions.

Biodiversity Monitoring and Invasive Alien Species

Study of animal biodiversity and its spatial and temporal variation, with particular emphasis on the monitoring, distribution and ecology of invasive alien species and the assessment of their impacts on biological communities.

Citizen Science Applied to Biodiversity Research and Ethology

Development and application of Citizen Science approaches to biodiversity monitoring and the study of animal behaviour, involving citizens in data collection and the production of scientific knowledge. Research also addresses the potential and limitations of data generated through participatory research processes.
