Carlo Concari holds a laurea degree in Electronic Engineering and a PhD in Information Technology from the University of Parma. Since 2014, he has been an Associate Professor at the Department of Engineering and Architecture of the same university.
Carlo Concari coordinates a research group comprising 5–10 researchers, post-docs, and PhD students. His research activities focus on the modeling and design of power converters and electric drives for applications ranging from electric and hybrid traction systems to industrial automation, home appliances, and grid-connected power converters for renewable energy sources. He also works on the diagnostics of electric motors and drives. Recently, he has focused on the application of wide-bandgap power devices (SiC, GaN) in converters for automotive, aerospace, and renewable energy applications. He has supervised over 40 Master's students, 12 PhD students, and 4 post-doctoral fellows.
He is the author or co-author of over 80 publications in high-level peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, garnering more than 1,645 citations with an h-index of 20 (Source: Scopus).
He has participated in various nationally and internationally funded research projects, including two European projects as participant, and a PRIN project as local coordinator:
- EU Clean Sky Joint Undertaking, grant agreement no. 641496: ALEA – “Accelerated Life tests for Electrical drives in Aircraft” (2014–2016). Modeling and accelerated life testing of electrical machines used in the aerospace industry, with a particular focus on wear resulting from high-frequency PWM waveforms generated by next-generation wide-bandgap (WBG) power devices. High-frequency supply causes high dv/dt and di/dt values, which can trigger partial discharges and other degradation phenomena.
- EU Clean Sky 2 Joint Undertaking, grant agreement no. 785513: RAISE – "Reliable Aircraft Electrical Insulation System sElection" (2018). A natural continuation of the previous ALEA project, this involved studying how the vulnerability of electrical machines to partial discharges and related degradation phenomena depends on the winding type.
- PRIN 2022 SYNERGY - "Superconducting electric machines and crYogenic power electronics for high-efficiency, reliable and power-dense eNERGY conversion". Research on electric drives and development of electronic power converters for cryogenic applications.
Carlo Concari is or has been the scientific coordinator for numerous technology transfer agreements between the university and industrial partners - both within and outside the Emilia-Romagna region - including:
- DVG Automation S.p.A. (Piacenza): development of high-reliability control boards for flow control in the petrochemical industry;
- Dolsatech S.r.l. (Parma): modeling and development of the electric powertrain for a four-wheeled hybrid-electric urban vehicle;
- Soulist S.r.l. (Parma): design and development of a remote radio-controlled actuator for on-stage audio mixers;
- Temec Drive S.r.l. (Reggio Emilia): development of innovative integrated electric drives for industry and home automation;
- Startec S.r.l. (Parma): development of electric drives and innovative control algorithms;
- ZAPI S.p.A. (Reggio Emilia): implementation of shared development tools for firmware programming and management for electric motor drives, and a teaching contract for a course on "Embedded System Design for Industrial Electronics";
- Casappa S.p.A. (Parma): electrification of hydraulic systems;
- Dragflow S.r.l. (Mantua): monitoring systems for dredging pumps;
- COBO S.p.A. (Brescia): control systems for electric drives based on machine learning techniques.
He is the co-founder of two academic spin-offs, including eDriveLAB S.r.l., which develops innovative electric mobility solutions for hybrid and electric road vehicles as well as off-highway machinery. He has served as a technical track chair for several IEEE-sponsored international conferences and is a regular reviewer for numerous high-level journals and conferences published by IEEE, IET, MDPI, and Elsevier.
