Curriculum Vitae

Andrea Cavazzoni is an Associate Professor at the University of Parma, where he conducts research and teaches in the fields of experimental oncology and molecular pathology. His scientific work focuses primarily on non-small-cell lung cancer, pleural mesothelioma, and the biological mechanisms that regulate tumor progression, response to treatment, and the development of resistance to targeted therapies. After earning a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences with honors and a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Pathology, he pursued a continuous academic career at the University of Parma, holding various research positions over the years until reaching his current position as an associate professor. Throughout his career, he has developed extensive expertise in the study of the major signaling pathways involved in oncogenesis, with a particular focus on EGFR, PI3K/AKT/mTOR, FAK, FGFR, CDK4/6, and, more recently, KRAS and other genomically relevant alterations from a translational perspective. His scientific output includes over 80 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, numerous presentations at national and international conferences, and ongoing participation in competitive research projects funded by public agencies and the pharmaceutical industry. His most recent work focuses on identifying new therapeutic approaches for NSCLC, overcoming drug resistance mechanisms, and studying prognostic and predictive biomarkers useful in clinical practice. In addition to his research, he is actively involved in teaching undergraduate and graduate programs at the University, holding positions in instruction, coordination, and tutoring. He is also engaged in institutional activities, supervising theses and doctoral students, and serving as a scientific reviewer for international journals.

Research areas

His research focuses on translational studies in solid tumors, with a particular emphasis on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Throughout his scientific career, he has explored various areas of tumor biology and oncological pharmacology, ranging from the characterization of the inducible expression of the tumor suppressor genes FHIT and p53 to the testing of new EGFR inhibitors, and the study of drug combination strategies in cellular models of NSCLC.

He has also contributed to collaborative projects aimed at analyzing the mechanisms of response and resistance to anti-EGFR treatments, as well as new therapeutic strategies with a particular focus on the squamous histotype of NSCLC. Another area of interest has focused on the mechanisms of action of immune checkpoint inhibitors, particularly the PD-1/PD-L1 axis, and the biological rationale for their combination with chemotherapy.

More recently, his work has focused on the molecular mechanisms of acquired resistance to KRASG12C inhibitors, such as sotorasib and adagrasib, in NSCLC cell lines. Concurrently, he has initiated new studies on the role of KRASG12D and KRASG12V mutations in non-small cell lung cancer. Overall, his scientific profile lies within the fields of targeted molecular therapies, mechanisms of drug resistance, and the identification of new therapeutic vulnerabilities in solid tumors.
