Curriculum Vitae

Daniele Nizzoli is Associate Professor of Ecology (BIOS-05/A) since November 1, 2024. He has been active at the University of Parma since 2003, progressing from research fellow to associate professor. He has supervised more than 50 Bachelor’s and Master’s students and has served as advisor or co-advisor for four PhD candidates in Evolutionary Biology and Ecology.

His research focuses on ecosystem ecology, integrating biogeochemistry and limnology to investigate the effects of natural and anthropogenic bioturbation on key processes in aquatic ecosystems, including primary production, organic matter mineralization, nutrient cycling, and greenhouse gas dynamics. A further research line addresses the formation and transport of nitrogen, phosphorus, and silica loads at the watershed scale, with particular attention to pressures arising from agricultural activities and urban settlements.

His work combines fundamental and applied research and contributes to the scientific support of strategies for sustainable resource management, the assessment of anthropogenic impacts on aquatic ecosystem functioning, and the restoration of degraded aquatic environments. He has collaborated with public institutions and private stakeholders within the framework of water management and environmental policies.

He is the author of more than 70 peer-reviewed scientific publications in international journals, including Global Change Biology, Science of the Total Environment, Biogeochemistry, and Limnology and Oceanography. Since 2020, he has served as Associate Editor of Hydrobiologia (Estuaries and Coastal Habitats section) and is a member of the PhD Board in Evolutionary Biology and Ecology at the Università degli Studi di Firenze. Since 2025, he has also been the local coordinator of two research sites within the Italian Long-Term Ecological Research network (LTER Italia).

Research areas

Ecosystem ecology and biogeochemistry focusing on how both natural and human-driven bioturbation shape key aquatic ecosystem processes, including primary productivity, organic matter mineralization, nutrient cycling, and greenhouse gas dynamics. Study of load formation and transport at the watershed scale, ecological flow implementation, and water quality in regulated basins and waterways.
