Barbara Bigliardi graduated with honors in Management Engineering from the University of Parma. In 2008, she obtained her PhD in Industrial Engineering, discussing a thesis on the management of technological innovation in industrial companies. From November 2005 to September 2014, she was a researcher in the academic discipline IEGE-01/A (ING-IND/35) “Business and Management Engineering” at the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Parma. From October 2014 to August 2025, she was an associate professor for the same academic discipline at the Department of Industrial Engineering, now Department of Engineering for Industrial Systems and Technologies. Since September 2025, she has been a full professor for the academic discipline IEGE-01/A (ING-IND/35) “Business and Management Engineering” at the Department of Engineering for Industrial Systems and Technologies.
Since April 2024, she has been the teaching representative for the Department of Engineering for Industrial Systems and Technologies at the University of Parma.
Since January 2020, she has been President of the Degree Course in Management Engineering at the University of Parma.
Since 2017, she has been Deputy Coordinator of the Doctoral Program in Industrial Engineering at the University of Parma.
She is the referent (art. 17 of the University Teaching Regulations - D.R. no. 1131 of 13/05/2024) for the Department of Systems Engineering and Industrial Technologies of the Master's Degree Course in Organizational, Digital, and Administrative Innovation of the Public Administration at the University of Parma (starting in the academic year 2025/2026).
Since October 2020, she has been Director of the Bachelor's and Master's Degree Programs in Management Engineering at the University of the Republic of San Marino.
Since 2023, she has been Coordinator of the PhD Program in Economic and Management Engineering and a member of the Scientific Council of the National School of Economic and Management Engineering at the University of the Republic of San Marino.
She currently teaches Business Economics (12 credits) for the Bachelor's Degree in Management Engineering and Marketing Management (1st module - 6 credits) for the Master's Degree in Management Engineering at the University of Parma. In addition, she teaches Business Economics (12 credits) for the Bachelor's Degree in Management Engineering and Marketing Management (9 credits) for the Master's Degree in Management Engineering at the University of the Republic of San Marino.
Since 2005, she has been involved in student tutoring and academic supervision, as detailed in the following sections, acting as supervisor or co-supervisor for more than 850 bachelor's and master's theses. In addition, she has served as a tutor for six doctoral students.
She is the author of more than 200 scientific publications, including 109 articles indexed in the Scopus database. She has also contributed numerous editorials to special issues and articles presented at national and international conferences and published in the relevant proceedings. She has also been invited to author several book chapters published in international scientific texts and is the editor of the book “The Space Economy: From Science to Market,” published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing.
With reference to the Scopus database, she has more than 3,800 citations and an H-index of 35.
She is a member of the editorial board of several international scientific journals, including the European Journal of Innovation Management, Journal of Open Innovation: Technology, Market and Complexity, and Sustainability. She has been and continues to be a guest editor of several special issues in international scientific journals.
During her academic career, she has received several awards and recognitions for her research, including:

- HIGHLY CITED PAPER: in November/December 2024, the article “Rethinking the Porter Hypothesis: The Underappreciated Importance of Value Appropriation and Pollution Intensity,” Review of Policy Research (2019), Vol. 36 No. 1, pp. 121-140, is ranked in the top 1% in the academic field of Social Sciences (https://www.webofscience.com/wos/woscc/full-record/WOS:000455958900006).
- TOP DOWNLOADED PAPER: in 2018 and 2019, the article “Rethinking the Porter Hypothesis: The Underappreciated Importance of Value Appropriation and Pollution Intensity,” Review of Policy Research (2019), Vol. 36 No. 1, pp. 121-140, was one of the most read articles in the Review of Policy Research journal.
- MOST CITED PAPER: in June 2016, the article “Innovation trends in the food industry: The case of functional foods,” Trends in Food Science & Technology (2013), Vol. 31 No. 2, pp. 118-129, was recognized as a highly cited paper.
