He has a strong record of integrative research, across disciplines and internationally, and has been main investigator or project leader in several major projects funded by the European Commission. Project Leader or local Coordinator of the followings projects financed by the European Commission (HELIOS, GEOPARKINSON, RANTIV, SUSCEPSTYRENE, DEVNERTOX) as Principal Investigator, he was awarded with a grant from the US NIH - NHLBI (R01-HL72323) for the project "Metals in exhaled condensed breath as biomarkers of COPD" (2002-2007).
Main research interests have focussed on studies of the metabolism and mechanisms of toxic action of industrial chemicals, with the aim of developing biomarkers of early adverse effects. Human studies have been characterised by the development and simultaneous use of appropriate markers of exposure (or internal dose),and early effects on the critical organ(s),and/or system(s), including the kidney, the lung, and the neuroendocrine, the nervous, and the immune system. A trait common to all such studies has been the assessment of dose-effect (response)relationships in humans.

OTHER PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES:
