Curriculum Vitae

Prof. Laura Giovati graduated with full marks in Biotechnology from the University of Verona. As part of her Master’s thesis, she conducted research at the Department of Applied Chemistry and Microbiology of the Helsinki University (Finland). From 2006 to 2010, she was awarded a PhD scholarship by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MUR) and completed her doctoral studies at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of Parma, earning a PhD in Microbiology and Virology. From 2010 to 2014, she held post-doctoral research fellowships in the field of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology at the University of Parma, serving on examination boards in Microbiology from 2013. From 2014 to 2022, she was Assistant Professor at the University of Parma. Since 2022, Laura Giovati she has been Associate Professor of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology in the Department of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Parma. In 2026, she obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for Full Professorship in Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology (SC 06/A3).

Her teaching activities include courses in Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology across several undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the University of Parma, including a joint degree programme offered in collaboration with the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
She also supervises undergraduate students, PhD candidates, research fellows and postdoctoral fellows in their academic and research activities.

Prof. Laura Giovati coordinates and participates in numerous research projects funded by national and international agencies and is the author or co-author of peer-reviewed scientific articles, book chapters, and contributions to national and international conferences.

Research areas

Early research of Prof. Laura Giovati focused on mycotoxins and immunoprophylactic approaches against mycotoxicosis. She expanded her research to the structural characterization and evaluation of antimicrobial, antiviral, and immunomodulatory properties of synthetic peptides derived from the sequences of human serum proteins, particularly antibodies.

More recent research interests include the development of innovative models of the human respiratory mucosa to investigate microbial pathogenesis and host responses to infection; the study of fungal and bacterial ecology of odontogenic infections and the activity of antimicrobial peptides against oral microbial biofilms; the development of novel strategies for integrated biological control and new therapeutic approaches for vector-borne diseases based on toxin-producing yeasts (killer yeasts) and peptides derived therefrom; and the discovery of selective microbial carbonic anhydrase inhibitors and the characterization of their antimicrobial activity.
