National and International Projects
1.The InCHIANTI Study (Invecchiare in Chianti, aging in the Chianti area).The InCHIANTI Study(Invecchiare in Chianti, aging in the Chianti area) is currently supported by a grant from the National Institute on Aging (NIH, NIA, Bethesda, USA) and is coordinated by the Tuscany Regional Health Agency in a partnership with the Florence Health Care Agency, the local Administrators and the primary care physicians of Greve in Chianti and Bagno a Ripoli, the two small towns in the
countryside of the Tuscany were the study is conducted. The goal is to translate epidemiological research into geriatric clinical tools that makes possible more precise diagnosis and more effective
treatment in older persons with mobility problems. The group of Parma including Prof. Maggio measured a number of hormonal parameters including testosterone, DHEA, DHEAS, estradiol, IGF-
1, IGFBP-1 and IGFBP-3, SHBG, thyroid hormones in the baseline and in 2 follow-up period.

2. PIVUS STUDY: Prospective Investigation of the Vasculature in Uppsala Seniors (PIVUS Study).The PIVUS study started in 2001 with the primary aim to investigate the predicive power of
different measurements of endothelial function and arterial compliance in a random sample of 1000 subjects aged 70 living in the community of Uppsala. As secondary aims, the study also included measurements of cardiac function and structure by ultrasound and MRI, evaluation of
atherosclerosis by ultrasound and MRI, 7 day food intake recordings, detailed ECG analysis,cardiovascular autonomic function, body composition by DXA, DNA analysis and lung function, as
well as a number of biochemical markers. The group of Parma including Prof. Maggio measured a number of hormonal parameters including testosterone, estradiol, and SHBG, in the baseline of the

3. Principal Investigator For Parma site of REGISTRY OF HYPOGONADISM IN MEN (RHYME) Study.started In May 2009 to maintain a multi-national (European) data-set of around 1,000 patients
(aged 18 and over), drawn from some 20 clinical sites, diagnosed with late-onset hypogonadism (HG), hypogonadism secondary to medical illness, and classical hypogonadism (eg, Klinefelter's
syndrome). Men registered on RHYME are not required to undergo T treatment for diagnosed HG.
The primary goal of RHYME is to examine the association between testosterone therapy and prostate health (eg, rate of positive prostate biopsies (primary endpoint), incidence of prostate
cancer and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) of men with HG that some believe is put at risk by testosterone therapy. Other goals include the assessment of HG symptoms and general health
outcomes in men with HG treated with T, as well as their clinical course compared to those men with HG who are not treated. The Registry will draw on observational studies at baseline, three
months, and then yearly intervals (for a minimum of two years). Data collected will include a full medical history, a physical examination, blood sampling, and patient questionnaires.

The study supported by Nutricia Danone is entitled Effect of nutritional supplementation on physical performance in elderly. This is an International, multi-centre, randomized controlled,
double-blind, parallel-group study with a facultative open-labelled extension with dose-finding. The Study has been approved in September 2011 by the Ethics Committee of Parma and completed in
2014.
5. Epidemiological Study Group of the prevalence of Sarcopenia and its clinical correlates in older
hospitalized population (GLISTEN: Italian Working Group on Sarcopenia – Treatment andNutrition). The general objective of this multicenter Project is to examine the predisposing
conditions and/or associated to sarcopenia in the community and in the hospital, and to determine the prevalence and incidence of sarcopenia in older hospitalized subjects (EWGSOP

9. 2015-today: Scientific Coordination and Support of Sunfrail Project, the first project to recieive
fundings under the third European Program of Public Health. The ongoing Project started in May 2015, collects 11 partners of 6 different European Countries, and 7 partners are Reference Sites
in the EIP-AHA. The Project is coordinated by Emilia-Romagna Region. Sunfrail has the goal to improve the identification, prevention and management of frailty and the care of multimorbidity in
older community-dwellers of loco-regional settings of European Countries. The experimental phase started in 2016 and will be concluded in 2018. Total Fundings 650.000Euros and assigned to
University-Hospital of Parma 50000 Euros.
10. 2014-today: Co-investigator of European Project MIDFRAIL (Local Responsible Prof. Gian Paolo
Ceda): International Research Project addressing the efficacy of combined management of
physical exercise and nutritional intervention to maintain physical function and quality of life in
subjects 70 yrs and older with type 2 diabetes.
11. 2016-2018: Coordinator for Parma Site of Protocol MBGS205 entitled “A Phase IIb multicentre,
double-blind, dose –ranging, randomized, placebo-controlled study evaluating safety and efficacy
of BGS649 in male subjects with hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism”. The Study was approved by
Ethics Committee of Parma in June 2016 and has estimated fundings of 20000 euros.
12. 2016-today: Cooordinator for Parma Site of SPRINTT (Sarcopenia and Physical fRailty IN older people: multi-componenT Treatment strategies) Fundings: 820000 Euros. The “Sarcopenia and
Physical fRailty IN older people: multi-componenT Treat- ment strategies” (SPRINTT) project has been designed to produce significant advancements in the management of older persons with PF&S by promoting a consensus among academia, regulators, industry, and patients’ representatives
(1) a clear operationalization of frailty; (2) the identification of a precise target population with
unmet medical needs; (3) the evaluation and validation of a new methodology for implementing in Europe preventive and therapeutic strategies among frail elders at risk of disability; (4)the definition of an experimental setting serving as template for regulatory purposes and pharmaceutical investigations; and (5) the identification of biomarkers and health technology solutions to be implemented in clinical practice [6]. A RCT testing the efficacy of multicomponent treatment (MCI) (based on the combination of structured physical activity, personalized dietary counseling and technological intervention) versus Healthy Aging Lifestyle Education [HALE]) in the prevention of physical disability in community older residents with physical frailty and sarcopenia during three years. The Project started to enroll subjects in January 2016 and completed the enrollment of 1500 subjects (108 in Parma) in October 2017. The Study involved 18 sites of 11 European Countries Paesi Europei con arruolamento di 1500 soggetti di cui 108 nel Centro di Parma.
Secondary Objectives: To evaluate the effects of MCI versus HALE on different parameters (physical performance, muscle mass, cognitive function,falls and use of heath system resources, mortality,
ecc.) in older subjects with physical frailty and sarcopenia;
To develop a sustainable model of health economy to take care of subjects with physical frailty and
sarcopenia.
