Lines of research

1976-1998: structural studies on Gramicidin A’ incorporated into model membranes; supramolecular organization of Gramicidin A’ channels; cation transport across biological membranes; interactions of Q homologues with membrane models; fluorescence investigation on DNA-DAPI complexes; steady state and time-resolved fluorescence investigation of the Sex Steroid Binding Protein, as a model of protein/steroid interactions; lipid peroxidation in tumour cells. 1998- until now. Research topics : (1) The Mouse Major Urinary Protein (MUP) complex as a model to investigate animal pheromonal communication and human allergy. Role of various residues on the correct protein folding and allergenicity. (2) Blood transfusion and metabolomic, in collaboration with the struttura Complessa di Medicina Trasfusionale AUSL-IRCCS di Reggio Emilia. Biochemical analysis and metabolic profiling by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of erythrocytes units (RBCs) conserved in blood bank conditions (4° C up to 42 days). Evaluation of metabolic changes during storage at different times and upon different treatments: leukodepletion and/or X-ray irradiation.
