RESEARCH ACTIVITY
The research activity is aimed to the investigation of mechanisms and factors regulating lipid homeostasis and its modulation for the prevention and therapy of several diseases, mainly chronic and degenerative. These studies are performed mainly in vitro and ex vivo, by using cell-based assays and different techniques and evaluating several cholesterol metabolism- as well as inflammation-related parameters. Research activity also focuses on the study of HDL lipoprotein capacity to promote cholesterol efflux, as index of HDL function, and its alterations in several clinical conditions associated to higher cardiovascular risk, and/or after pharmacological treatments. More recently, the research interest has moved to the study of cholesterol homeostasis and its potential dysregulation in Alzheimer's disease (AD) in the search of novel lipid-based pharmacological targets. Among these, the research focuses on the inhibition of the PCSK9 protein, by the mean of novel small molecules, as potential pharmacological strategy to counteract AD-related neurodegeneration.

  • UniStem Day 2026
