The research activity carried out by Prof. Andrea Volpi, as Associate Professor, enrols within the scientific disciplinary sector IIND-05/A “Industrial Mechanical Plants”, and encompasses various themes, concerning:
- Application of automatic identification technologies (RFID, Radio Frequency Identification) to the re-engineering of logistics processes and supply chain management;
- Food and non-food plants, with reference to production and logistics processes, and LCA analysis;
- Optimisation of warehouse logistics processes, with traditional tools and the use of numerical simulation;
- Industrial plants automation and IIoT.

Andrea Volpi has been teaching within the scientific-disciplinary field IIND-05/A “Industrial Mechanical Systems” at the Department of Industrial Systems and Technologies Engineering, University of Parma, since A.Y. 2005-2006.
- Teaching responsibility for the teaching of Mechanical Plants (9 CFU), for the Bachelor's degree course in Mechanical Engineering (until A.Y. 2022/2023);
- Teaching responsibility for the teaching of Utility Plants Design (9 CFU), for the Master's degree course in Mechanical Engineering
- Teaching responsibility for the teaching of Industrial Plant Automation (6 CFU) for the Master's degree course in Mechanical Engineering
- Teaching support activities, consisting of tutorials, supplementary teaching and participation in profit examination committees, for the teachings of SSD IIND-05/A of the Degree Courses of the Department of Engineering and Architecture;
- Committee member for the examinations of Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering, and Engineering for the Food Industry.
As part of its courses of expertise, it has woven relationships with companies in the area in order to offer seminars to students during the hours of teaching activities. Companies such as Barilla, GEA Niro Soavi, Tecfrigo, Thun logistics, Bormioli Rocco, GSK, Dallara, Daikin have taken seminaries to students.
