4. RESEARCH INTERESTS
Populations biology and evolutionary ecology of aquatic invertebrates are the main topics of her research activity. She is interested in the evolution of life history traits and evolutionary genetics, with special reference to reproductive modes, dormancy and maternal effects. She has cultivated basic and applied aspects of ecology, with special focus on the dynamics of natural populations and their genetic variability (investigated by enzymatic and molecular markers). An important aspect of her activity is the investigation in nature and in the laboratory of biological and ecological features of different genotypes.
Population ecology and population genetics of aquatic crustaceans such as: Heterocypris incongruens, Eucypris virens, Limnocythere inopinata and Darwinula stevensoni (Ostracoda), Daphnia obtusa, D. longispina, D magna and D pulex (Cladocera), Mixodiaptomus kupelwieseri (Copepoda). Genetic markers are used as a taxonomic tool to distinguish ecologically different subspecies and subpopulation units. Genetic variability in time and space has been evaluated in relation to the ecology and biological characteristics of species with different reproductive modes: the geographic parthenogenesis of H. incongruens, E. virens and L. inopinata, the obligate parthenogenetic populations of D. stevensoni, the cyclical parthenogenetic populations of Daphnia and the sexual populations of M. kupelwieseri.
