Riccardo C. Bonadonna was born in Palermo on April 17 1957. He graduated in Medicine in 1981 at University of Genoa School of Medicine. He is an Italian Board certified specialist in Geriatric Medicine (1986), in Nuclear Medicine (1990) and in Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases (2000). He has worked long periods of time in foreign Institutions (1985-88: Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, U.S.A.; 1988-90: University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, TX; 1993: University of Helsinki School of Medicine, Helsinki, Finland). His research focuses on the etiology and pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes, on the pathogenesis of vascular dysfunction associated to the traits of the Metabolic Syndrome (Insulin Resistance Syndrome), and on innovative therapies of diabetes mellitus. He is an author of over 150 scientific publications in English language in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He was awarded the Novartis Award in Diabetes (2002) and the S.I.D. Research Award (2004) for his research in diabetes. He is listed among the Top Italian Scientists of the VIA-Academy (http://www.topitalianscientists.org/Top_italian_scientists_VIA-Academy.aspx).
