Luca Iori (born in Piacenza, 1985) is Associate Professor of Greek History at the University of Parma, where he teaches Greek History, History of Ancient Historiography, and Methodologies of Historical Research.
His research focuses primarily on Greek historiography and its reception in the modern and contemporary periods, with particular emphasis on Thomas Hobbes’s engagement with Thucydides, a topic explored in his monograph Thucydides Anglicus. Gli Eight Bookes di Thomas Hobbes e la ricezione inglese delle Storie di Tucidide (1450–1642) (Rome: Edizioni di Storia e Letteratura, 2015), which was shortlisted for the 2016 Viareggio-Rèpaci Prize in the Essay category. He has also published extensively on the modern reception of Athenian democracy and on the history of Classical scholarship under Fascism, with particular attention to the implementation of the anti-Jewish racial laws and to the “liberal classicism” associated with the intellectual circle of Piero Gobetti.
Together with Ugo Fantasia, he co-edited La democrazia ateniese in età moderna e contemporanea (Quaderni della Rivista Storica Italiana; Naples: Edizioni Scientifiche Italiane, 2023), and, with Ivan Matijašić, Thucydides in the ‘Age of Extremes’ and Beyond: Academia and Politics (History of Classical Scholarship, Supplementary Volume 5; Newcastle upon Tyne–Venice, 2022).
He is co-editor, together with Professor Kinch Hoekstra (University of California, Berkeley), of the critical edition of Thomas Hobbes’s translation of Thucydides for the Clarendon Edition of the Works of Thomas Hobbes (Oxford University Press).
He is a member of the Steering Committee overseeing the new annotated Italian translation of Thucydides’ Historiessponsored by the Istituto Italiano per la Storia Antica (Rome).
He is Principal Investigator of the University of Parma PRA 2024 project Global Thucydides: Editors, Readers, Translators (1848–2024).
Since 2025 he has been a Fellow of the Turin Academy of Sciences (Class of Moral, Historical, and Philological Sciences). In 2019, he was a Research Fellow at The Huntington Library (Los Angeles).
He has presented his research at numerous Italian and international universities and research institutions, including the Turin Academy of Sciences, All Souls College (Oxford), the Center for Hellenic Studies (Harvard University), the Centro Studi Piero Gobetti (Turin), the Institute of Classical Studies (University of London), the Istituto Italiano per la Storia Antica (Rome), the Scuola Normale Superiore (Pisa), The Huntington Library (Los Angeles), The Warburg Institute (University of London), the University of Bristol, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Calabria, the Université de Franche-Comté (Besançon), the University of Milan, Newcastle University, the University of Padua, the University of Pisa, the University of Naples Federico II, the University of Naples L’Orientale, Sapienza University of Rome, the University of Siena, the University of Tokyo, the University of Trento, the University of Urbino, and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice.
He has participated in two Italian PRIN projects in Greek History—Sulle sponde dello Ionio (Principal Investigator: Giuseppe De Sensi Sestito, University of Calabria, 2012–2013) and Sharing in the Community: Citizenship and Society in the Greek World (7th–2nd Century BC) (Principal Investigator: Michele Faraguna, University of Milan, 2022–2025)—as well as in the ERC Advanced Grant project Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library Based on Ancient Texts (Principal Investigator: Isabella Andorlini, University of Parma, 2014–2016), and the PRIN 2017 project The Nuncio’s Secret Archives: Papal Diplomacy and European Multi-denominational Societies Before the Thirty Years War(Principal Investigator: Elena Bonora, University of Parma).
