Simone Cirani ha conseguito la Laurea Specialistica in Ingegneria Informatica con lode nel 2007 ed il Dottorato in Tecnologie dell'Informazione presso l'Università degli Studi di Parma nel 2011.
È stato assegnista di ricerca dal 2012 al 2015 presso l'Università degli Studi di Parma.
La sua attività di ricerca include Internet of Things, Sistemi distribuiti, Edge Computing, Mobile Computing, Sicurezza nelle reti informatiche.
È autore di più di 30 pubblicazioni scientifiche su riviste e conferenze internazionali e del libro "Internet of Things: Architectures, Protocols and Standards".
Ha partecipato al Technical Program Committee di diverse conferenze scientifici ed eventi internazionali.
È stato tra gli organizzatori delle Scuole di Dottorato "Internet of Things and Smart Cities Ph.D. School" negli anni 2013 e 2014 e del Workshop IoT-Sys 2015 (MobiSys Conference).
Nel 2016 ha co-fondato l'azienda Caligoo Srl di cui è Director of Engineering e Head of Internet of Things.
È professore a contratto presso l'Università degli Studi di Parma per il corso di Programmazione di Sistemi Mobili.
