L’attività di ricerca si è sempre concentrata sugli aspetti morfologici e funzionali della cellula e delle sue interazioni con citochine, fattori di differenziamento cellulare ma anche con molecole a potenziale farmacologico e i virus. Le ricerche sono state condotte usando un approccio metodologico che si è avvalso delle tecniche di istochimica, di citologia, di microscopia elettronica e citometria a flusso al fine di studiare, anche con l’ausilio delle analisi molecolari di proteomica e trascrittomica, le strutture cellulari e subcellulari e le loro correlazioni funzionali.
In particolare si sono studiati gli aspetti fenotipici, le alterazioni morfologico-funzionali ed il signalling nel differenziamento della cellula staminale ematopoietica; il fenotipo recettoriale, il signalling e la resistenza farmacologica della cellula tumorale. Sono stati effettuati studi di caratterizzazione fenotipico-funzionale della cella linfoide T nella risposta immune e delle cellule staminali nel differenziamento cellulare non ematopoietico come quello cardiaco, endoteliale, muscolare scheletrico, condrocitario ed intestinale. In ambito ematologico, si sono prodotte pubblicazioni scientifiche sulle piastrine, che sono state studiate sia nei meccanismi di attivazione funzionale e degranulazione, sia negli aspetti fenotipico-funzionali del processo trompoietico normale e patologico. Sono inoltre presenti studi di interazione ospite-virus, con l’analisi sia degli aspetti funzionali della cellula infetta che delle alterazioni morfologico strutturali del tessuto infetto. L’attività di ricerca si è inoltre indirizzata verso gli aspetti funzionali dell’apparto muscolo scheletrico e della fitness muscolare.
